In lieu of latkes…

All the bloggies and food sites are proudly showing off their potato pancakes this week in honor of the festival of lights–happy Hanukkah! But I do not have any crunchy latkes to give you, even though I love them, because truth be told, I still haven’t had a chance to go food shopping, let alone cook a meal, since returning from our holiday in Minnesota. So I got nothing for you, latke lovers.

Instead, I decided to show you what I’ve been doing–working, at that desk, above.
I don’t think I’ve ever actually shown my work lair at Glamour magazine to you, but here it is: piles of lovely books and galleys, piles of paper, a cool phone that I still don’t think I’m using properly.
I show you this because next to my desk at home and the kitchen counter, it’s where I spend a lot of my creative time. The photo is also a means of explaining how sometimes things get in the way of cooking, eating with my family, food shopping…all the things I love to do.
In fact, last night, I got home so late (thank you New Jersey Transit for another stellar commute) that I didn’t get to put my kids to bed for the second night in a row. When it came to dinner, all I could manage was to slice one ripe avocado into succulent slivers, drizzle it with an herby vinaigrette, and put it in my mouth while watching a really great documentary on PBS about John Lennon’s years as a New Yorker (I didn’t know he got back together with Yoko after performing Whatever Gets You Through the Night with Elton John at Madison Square Garden, did you?).
So that’s my true confession. Like you, I’m sometimes too tired, too busy, too tied to my real job to cook and take pretty pictures. So I reheat pasta and eat an avocado and drink a glass of wine.. As John and Elton would say, whatever gets you through the night.
But tomorrow is a new day!
And stay-tuned…my mom is having a winter art party at our house tomorrow and I’m going to be making all kinds of lovely finger foods. Smoked salmon pizza with creme fraiche? Prosciutto wrapped figs? Little fried olives? So many possibilities.
And also Devilandegg will soon be boasting a groovy (yes, groovy) new look.
Keep watching right here!
