My Birthday at Stone Barns

On Friday, lucky me got to spend my birthday at one of my favorite places: Stone Barns in Tarrytown, NY.

Tim, my mom, and Conor took me for lunch and shopping at the farmer’s market(and I even got some birthday goodies at the shop: a pickling book from my mom, some lovely red dish towels, and for the car ride home, a piece of pear cake…hmmmm) and then we took a windswept walk around the fields and grounds flecked with fallen leaves. We paid a special visit to the heirloom turkeys, who are, sadly for them, not long for this earth…but they did look blissful in their ignorance (my friend Jay told me they sold out for this year’s Thanksgiving dinner in 20 minutes!)! I took a mess of photos of the day, which are below, and I know I’ve gushed about this place before but if you can ever make it there for a visit–please do!

Lunch: an inspiring pasta salad mixed with the last of the season’s sungold tomatoes, almonds, goat cheese, brussell sprouts and whatever else was in the pantry (I loved that they also used cut pieces of spaghetti, I can’t wait to make this at home).

There was also a a broccoli and cauliflower salad; foccacia bread topped with roast beef and a deliciously tangy tuna salad; beet soup; and apple cider.

For Conor peanut butter and jam on a brioche roll with a side of chocolate milk.

A visit to the cows, including some gorgeous calves and a sassy donkey companion, who was honestly the most attractive donkey I’ve ever seen.

The farmer’s market which was selling cabbages, rainbow swiss chard, beets, peppers, eggplant, leeks, celeriac (the root of the celery plant, which is delicious shredded and mixed with mayonnaise for a cold salad) and lettuces.

The courtyard…

The turkeys…

Conor in the leaves…

A swarm of swallows…

Feeding time for the cows…

And me and Conor in front of the vegetable garden…

Thanks, fam, for a great day…
