Soda Throwback

While trolling the aisle of my local supermarket the other day I spotted this display for throwback Mountain Dew and Pepsi. The boxes had initially caught my eye because of their retro-graphic appeal–why is it that logo designs used to be so much cooler?

But “throwback” is not referring to the use of a font other than Helvetica, it’s because these reissued soda pops are sweetened with cane sugar, just like in the good old days.
Not that I’m supporting a soda habit, but if you’re going to drink a can of pop, then why not have one made with real sugar?
When I visited Austin a few years ago, I lucky enough to be invited on a tour of Tex-Mex restaurants (something I highly recommend doing, if only once in your life). The host was nice enough to stock a cooler filled with bottles of “Mexican” Cokes, which were sweetened with cane sugar. On a hot day, with a belly full of queso and carnitas, there was nothing better.
So I am all for this throwback–what do you think?
