Summer Calm/Summer Crazy

Since it’s a dreary, sticky Tuesday, I thought everyone could use just a pretty photo of summery things. This is our kitchen table with yellow peaches, cherries, heirloom cherry tomatoes, a jalapeno, a sweet onion, and an open-faced Jersey tomato sandwich with just mayo and fleur de sel sprinkled on top. You wouldn’t know it from this calm composition, but this weekend we celebrated Tim’s birthday with an outdoor dinner party that went from being a mellow get-together to a “Oh my God, the entire neighborhood is in my backyard!” humdinger. At one point I looked out beyond the patio, and against the setting sun there were kids I had never seen before running across the yard with open bottles of my ginger beer (we were making dark and stormies) in one hand, a pork taco in the other, and glow sticks wrapped around their heads.
One kid came over and said, “Mrs. Campion, I heard you’re giving out beer…” I think he was 10.
