Them Apples

Photos from my first visit to the apple orchard. These apples are from the wonderful Melick’s in Oldwick, New Jersey. I picked out a 1/2 bushel basket of Macouns for making an apple crostata (photo and recipe to follow).

Have you gone apple picking yet? Tim thinks the whole thing is a bit of a scam (he is the son of a farmer) to get people to pay for picking your crops…which is probably true. But it’s still a beautiful way to spend an autumn afternoon, don’t you think? I didn’t pick this time because I was in a rush trying to get my food shopping in before preschool pick-up, etc. Just went to the barn, picked out a basket and grabbed a jug of delicious cider. But as soon as the bushel is done I want to go back and pick some crops–scam or no scam.

Nice photo of the field of apples. I’m so impressed at how darn productive apple trees can be.
My family and I are burnt out on PYO by this time of year. We’ve picked enough berries to last a life time and my kids stopped wanting to accompany me months ago. I guess that makes me a bigger sucker than you. Tell Tim that in my case the price is extremely reasonable and the product is so much better that I can’t go wrong. At least, that’s what I’m telling myself.
