Things I Like: Floral Inspiration

This week spring arrived in our part of the world and it is glorious…unless of course you are an allergy sufferer, and in that case I hope you’re well-medicated and headed to Arizona. If pollen is not your worst nightmare, then hasn’t it been wonderful to wake up and find the trees and bushes alive with blooms? Almost shocking, but in a good way. From the train this week, I’ve been watching new colors appear every day from cherry blossoms, forsythia bushes and magnolia trees as they blur by the window. And nature really got it right when it comes to forsythia–stalks of tiny yellow flowers, almost neon they are so bright, bursting against the still gray landscape. They are (in my mind) the perfect announcement of spring.

I went to lunch the other day at one of my favorite NYC restaurants–ESCA–and was greeted at the door by this beautiful but very simple arrangement of forsythia in a giant rustic urn. After eating my briny and buttery plankton (plankton in the pasta dough!) pasta with sweet and tiny scallops, I took a photo of the arrangement so I could duplicate it at home (because restaurants sometimes have the best floral inspiration).

When I got home I headed out to the backyard, clipped a bunch of stalks from one of our forsythia bushes, and found a large clay antique jar that would be strong enough to hold the arrangement but still have that rustic look (although more Americana rather than Tuscan). So here’s what it looks like in our house:

Not bad right? I’ve since been looking for other inspiring spring arrangements on Pinterest (Are you on Pinterest? If so then you can follow me at Caroline Campion!). These images comes from the Terrain shop:

Simple, stark, beautiful.

So do you have any springtime arrangements in your house?
